Let the harvests begin!

Posted on May 18th, 2020 by Ilene Freedman

It’s Week 1 of House in the Woods Farm CSA season 2020! We are so happy to welcome you to the farm again. We hope the farm will be a sanctuary for you. Gardens and farms are healing places, calming spaces to help you breathe. This is a time when we all need a little garden therapy. I hope you will take some extra time while you are here. Enjoy the open space and relax. Check out the fields, see how the crops are growing. Get to know your food and where it comes from.

We also want you to feel safe and comfortable on the farm. Farm experiences will be a little different for now, focusing on independent family time rather than group activities. We have a list of social distancing and washing precautions for you to review, coming to you with the farm directions and what to bring to the farm.

Pickup times are Thursday or Friday between 9am-7pm. (if necessary, Saturday). If you would like Boxed Trunk Delivery, please sign up for the Extra Item entitled Boxed Trunk Delivery between Friday 10am-12pm during your share customization period. There is a small fee for this service, but just let me know if you need a credit code to reimburse for it.

Spring Crops

March was warm and everyone thought it might stay warm. Then April and May came in cold and we thought it would never warm up! Crops grew slowly in April, and May freezes were intense and damaging. But we have replanted a few crops and are only set back by a couple weeks on those. Meanwhile, spring crops have grown quickly in the past couple weeks and are ready to go! We have succulent greens ready for this week’s harvest, bok choy (edible spoons!) and crisp salad turnips to slice and eat raw with dip or toss into salads. Two kinds of lettuce, red and green leaf! Tatsoi is delicate Asian spinach. Use it any way you’d use spinach: in salads, soups, sauteed, baked in dishes. Napa cabbage is a one-stop salad: chop it up from stem to leaf and it’s like celery and lettuce all in one, great with an Asian sesame-soy dressing. Napa can also be lightly sauteed with garlic and a splash of soy sauce. Watch for more recipes and seek out extra ideas if you need them.

Review your share now and see if you'd like to make any changes. I encourage you to swap items til it's just how you want it! And if you'd like to buy extras, check out what's available--extra share items, boxed trunk delivery, and lots of plants for your garden or patio containers.
