CSA Week #6-A

Posted on June 23rd, 2021 by Bonnie and Rudy Geber

It's that time of the week! Remember to switch and swap your veggies, add-on local eggs, breads, bagels, or honey!

It was a great market day yesterday, and we were pleased by the turnout of both vendors and customers. Every single vendor spot was filled yesterday, and with interest from other vendors already, I'm sure we will see some additional spaces in the future. The Kids Corner was a great addition to the market and will be back for another one in July. One of the activities that they did yesterday at the market was to decorate pots and transplant some Hoot Owl Farm seedlings to take home and grow. What a fun idea and a great way to familiarize kids with how food becomes...well, food!

It looks like we have a sunny and hot week ahead, so we'll be trying to get after the days EARLY! We are still planting quite a bit each week, and harvesting is rapidly becoming the biggest job of the week by far. We anticipate another big pea harvest (or two) as well as one of our 'regular pickings' to begin this week - summer squash. We still don't have enough summer squash to include in your boxes, but probably will in a week or two. Some of the highlights for this week's options are beets, lovely green cabbage (think Asian Chicken Salad), and some seriously impressive romaine. We've had some trials and tribulations growing romaine over the years, but are really figuring out just what it needs -- space -- many issues melted away once we increased our spacing in romaine beds. Tightly spaced crops can be great; the faster the plant canopy closes, the sooner weeds are smothered. But also, the tighter the spacing, the less airflow each plant gets which can lead to pest and disease problems if you wait too long to harvest. It's one of those not too hot, not too cold, just right scenarios!

Let us know if you have any questions this week. We'll be doing several more Farm Stand boxes, so if this is your first time ordering a box, be sure to follow your order all the way through to completion. You will receive a confirmation email once your order is complete.

Enjoy the sunny days this weekend! Cheers, Rudy & Bonnie
