Farm Happenings for February 8, 2023

Posted on February 5th, 2023 by Mark Kastner
The first week in February is mainly a maintenance week, as photosynthesis slowly begins for most plant life. The early Tomato plants are developing their first true leaves under artificial light and we'll transplant  them to bigger pots in a couple of weeks and introduce them to natural daylight. I make room for them in the soon to be very crowded growing room by transplanting the last of the winter Lettuce and Spinach into the unheated high tunnels!

The second week in February we'll seed flats of the main Tomato crop and about half of the main Pepper crop in the nursery in normal daylight.  I will direct seed carrots and sow flats of supporting crops like Celery, Kale, Cucumbers, and more Lettuce. Then in mid March the curtain goes up on the 2023 growing Show!

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Indoor Farmers Market  after that, 3:00-6:00. Thursday is farm pick up and home delivery for our CSA designates, and Saturday I am at the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery in Grand Ledge, 11:00-12:00 noon.
