Farm Happenings for February 1, 2023

Posted on January 29th, 2023 by Mark Kastner

Only about nine more minutes per day of Daylight until we pass the 10 hours required for plant growth and regeneration. Every year we run short of fresh greens as we wait for the new crops to begin their slow agonizing progress!

There is a process called the Enterprise Budget, that analyzes the profitability of a specific crop. Although records keeping is detailed and slow, it's recommended that the Farmer measure 2-3 crops per year to make sure one will be able to pay the bills at the end of the Year! I have not raised the price of Eggs  to the CSA Membership at $4.00/dozen, nor do I intend to do so; Romaine Lettuce and Carrots (the subjects of this year's Budget Study) are the same as several years before the pandemic. I  feel that reasonable pricing is part of delivering value to the Membership, and will carefully monitor my costs!

This week I am at the Family Fare  parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Indoor Farmers Market after that, 3:00-6:00. Thursday is farm pick up and home deliveries, and Saturday I am in the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery in  Grand Ledge, 11:00-12:00. I hope to see you soon!
