Farm Happenings for November 4, 2020

Posted on October 25th, 2020 by Mark Kastner

We will not be washing root vegetables like [potatoes, carrots, and beets any more this year. Washing removes the protective enzyme and microbial coating that allows us to store them without chemical treatment.

The seasonal "shoulder" crops like Brussels Sprouts, Spinach, ad Asian Greens Salad Mix are doing very well,  although the Sprouts are still small. We will also reintroduce soon our Spring Salad Mix, a peppery mix with 6 baby lettuces  and 5 greens, including Arugula. The greens just wouldn't grow in the hot weather!

Lastly, sign up for the fall/ winter CSA  is open; the first distributions are next week. Auto renew kicks in  tomorrow for those of you who  don't want to change anything. I will soon offer items like special coffees, local maple syrup and honey in the EXTRAS section of the Harvie menu. Also, look for additional products in Harvie, and the organic Ginger and Turmeric is now curing!

This week I am at the Family Fare parking lot in Eaton Rapids on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, and the Allen Street Farmers Market after that. Thursday afternoon is farm pick up, and Saturday I am at the parking lot behind Flour Child Bakery in Grand Ledge 11:00-12:00 noon. The fall/ winter preorder format will help insure the freshness and safety of your food! Thank you for your cooperation.

Thank you,
