Summer Harvest Share - Week 15

Posted on September 7th, 2022 by Sarah Duprey

Please pop your head outside and take a look at the harvest moon tonight! Another week gone by!  And we cruise into week 15 - meaning, including this week, we have just two deliveries left in the summer CSA!  Weather-wise, summer appears to be really holding on, which is nice for the continuing growth of many of our fall and winter crops, like cabbage and sweet potatoes, which are really starting to put on their weight.  Also our fall and winter carrots which are looking great!  I think also, especially after those cooler rainy days, some of our staff especially will be savoring this lingering summer weather!  Heat is tough when working outside all day, as is cold, but 65-70 degrees and sunny is the sweet spot for the tough work of finishing up the summer season!

In terms of crops, we are sad (but our backs are so so happy!) to say goodbye to this years melons!  It was a good run all told, we trialed some new varieties, played around with planting dates to avoid the dreaded "sudden wilt" which we've lost plantings to in past years, and had a lot of success!  I'm toying around with the idea of adding more next year, but I might have a staff (and Eric) revolt on my hands if we had any more weeks of deliveries.

We are also seeing a big upswing of fall broccoli this week, as we're hoping to pull out of some of the disease issues that have been troubling us in past weeks, and also WINTER SQUASH (which is farmer speak for "pumpkin spice") season is just starting, as you can see by the delicata available in shares this week.  Delicata are one of the special veggies you can only really find locally.  You can't really go wrong with roasting it - so give it a go and get ready for fall!  https://www.seriouseats.com/roasted-delicata-squash-5209890

Housekeeping - Don't get caught with unscheduled held shares!

Rescheduling and holds are a critical part of our adding some convenience to the CSA model, and we love that you can do it!  But if you've put shares on hold for a week in the past NOW is the time to reschedule as we do not credit for held shares unredeemed nor can we reschedule shares for coming seasons (Summer shares rescheduled to fall, for example).  So please, please, please use this link HERE to check if you have shares on hold and reschedule them for this week (by Sunday at 7PM) or in the coming weeks (last Summer deliveries are the week of 9/19/22). We will be doing our best to add bulk items (as harvest allows) over the coming weeks that can be processed or stored to help folks use up those shares. Check out bulk pepper and tomato options this week for your shares, or just as extras!
