Summer Harvest Share - Week 4

Posted on June 25th, 2021 by Sarah Duprey

We've already arrived at week 4, and my head is spinning a little at the speed with which this season and summer is flying by.   That is the nature of summers in Maine though.  Things are really starting to kick into high gear on the farm as we hit the season where we are harvesting, planting, and weeding all at once. Eric and my schedules feel like a whirl wind of deliveries, staying ahead of the crew, and late nights.  We'll hold on at this pace until late August/September when some of the planting and weeding slows.  This means our days on the farm are packed and long.  We are committed this summer to taking more time off to enjoy Maine's mountains, so fingers-crossed that we get some good hikes in before the snow flies!

Alas, we won't have any more strawberries this week as the season is winding down, but that means blueberries (and hopefully peaches!) will be along shortly!  AND we planted our second planting of watermelon and cantaloupe today so we'll hopefully have melons from August and through early September.

A friendly reminder - you have until Sunday at 7:00 PM to:

-Customize your share

-Add extras

-Reschedule your share/place your share on hold

-Change your pick-up location for the coming week

Please help us keep organized by doing these tasks by Sunday at 7:00 PM!  Our Monday's and Tuesdays are very busy and very long, and we will not have time to accommodate last minute changes.

We has a tough time coming up with the veggie of the week this week as we're getting into the part of the season where lots of new things are coming, so

  • Lemon Basil - citrus-y, basil-y, fresh and summer-y - Lemon Basil is a new flavor for many, but it's really delicious.  Wonderful in salad dressings, cocktails (or mocktails), with fish or chicken or pasta, lemon basil is nearly as versatile as Genovese basil.  Give it a try!
  • Kohlrabi - Kohlrabi is a seriously under-rated veggie.  As versatile as carrots, crunchy like radish and sweet like salad turnips, Kohlrabi is great for dipping, stir fries, and roasts.  Eat it fresh or cooked - it's delicious!
  • And of course Garlic Scapes......

We are still a few weeks (at least) away from tomatoes, but the plants look great and they are creeping closer to ripe every week.  We're hoping for an early and abundant year!
