Summer Harvest Share - Week 2

Posted on June 11th, 2021 by Sarah Duprey

We've made it through our first week of deliveries and we're already launching into Week 2, which, thankfully is looking like it will be significantly cooler than Week 1.  The first week of the CSA can be pretty stressful as we work out lots of kinks, train lots of harvest tasks, and run through all our systems for the first time.  We definitely had some kerfuffles with our Thursday deliveries, and if you had any difficulty getting your share, please let us know.  We're already working on plans to make next week run more smoothly.

We have strawberries available this week from our friends and neighbors at Fairwinds Farm right here in Bowdoinham (they also have a wonderful U-Pick opening this week, which I highly recommend).  They are not certified organic, but they ae grown with much love and skill (Bethany worked for Fairwinds for years and wouldn't get her strawberries anywhere else). They are so fleeting , enjoy them while they are here!

Some of the plants LOVED last week's heat: our peppers, tomatoes, basil and melons are flourishing.  Many of the greens struggled, and some went by all-together and were a bit of a loss.  Hopefully this week, with it's cooler temps and cloudier days, we can savor a little bit more of succulent kales and greens that are so much more seasonal to this time of year.

The heat was also hard on the humans of the farm, long days over 90 degrees really do a number on everybody's health. A heat wave is no fun on a farm.  But the crew was amazing, pushed through and made our first week a great success.

We've got some new and fun early summer veggies available this week!  Basil, cukes, a little broccoli, and garlic scapes all make their debut this coming week.  We'll have lots more of all of these over the coming weeks.
