Week 9 - Halfway there!

Posted on July 31st, 2020 by Bethany Allen

It has been a rough hot week on the farm this past week.  We got more rain and clouds than expected, which eased the heat on a few days this week.  And for much of the crew week, our crew opted to start at 5 AM so that we could all be done by the hottest hours of the day.  It looks like we've got another hot day or two coming, but most of the heat wave is behind us, for now.   We may even get some heavy rain due to the tropical storm headed our way!

Our cherry tomatoes are kicking into high gear, which means the rest are not farm behind!  As you can see, the plants look amazing this year - they've nearly reached the rafters of our high tunnel and are still growing!

We're also getting into peak hornworm season - if you've ever grown tomatoes, you know how this beast of a worm can wreak havoc.  We've been picking them out as we go along, trying to stay ahead of the damage they cause.  Today I found 2 that looked like the one below.  These worms we leave, because those white pods on it's back are the eggs of parasitic wasps, which feed on the hornworm, then hatch into more wasps which continue to feed on the hornworms that eat our tomatoes.  Nature is really amazing, and sometimes - a little gross :)

Interesting New Veggies this week:

Lemon Basil:  Did you know the basil comes in flavors - our favorite it lemon, so we've grown some for you to try if you like.  Lemon basil is mild enough to flavor grilled fish or shrimp and can be substituted for basil if you are looking for a fresh twist of flavor. Finely chop and add it to pasta with julienne vegetables and a flavorful extra virgin olive oil for a light and delicious meal.

Cilantro:  I personally think cilantro is the best herb, hands down.  To me it just tastes like summer.  It is great chopped with tomatoes for a fresh salsa, I love adding it to wraps and sandwiches for a fresh kick, and use it to garnish your tacos.

Asian Eggplant - As with most veggies, there are many more varieties and types of eggplant than can be found typically in the grocery store.  We don't grow all of these (we know many of you are not huge fans of eggplant), but we do grown the type of eggplant typically called Asian.  It is distinct from the stereotypical bell shaped eggplant and is long and thin.  Though its flavor is the the same, it's difference in shape make it nice for roasting halved or chopping into coins.  I like to halve it, and roast it topped with cherry tomatoes, basil and cheese.

Extras this week:

Winter Hill Farmstead Feta:  Fresh, cows' milk feta, made in Freeport, by one of our favorite creameries.  Not too salty, perfect for those summer salads!  $9.00/container

Bulk Pickling Cukes:  Now is the season to make pickes!  15lb for $24.00 from our farm, delivered with your share

Whately Farm Duck Eggs: Delicious, local organic duck eggs! $6.00/half dozen
