Farm Happenings for July 20, 2023

Posted on July 15th, 2023 by Greg Stainton

Hello members!

We had some ups and downs on the farm this week.  We had some new products and tried doing a few things differently with some mixed results.  At the end of the week, we had a few products destined for farm shares that were not included in the deliveries.  We are not sure who was missed but please let us know if there were any concerns with your order this week.  We want to ensure all members have a positive experience and receive high quality products.  We really appreciate all feedback.

We will make a few changes for next week.

We have not found a good way to store basil so that it stays fresh while refrigerated (so that we can keep it together with the rest of your order) so we will not include this in farm shares for now until we find a better way to keep it fresh.  If you have tips or suggestions, please send them our way!  We will try our best to have it weekly at the market stand for those of you who visit us there.

We have read about tomato storage and it seems (according to Kate's favorite reference, Serious Eats) that tomatoes do NOT lose their flavour in the fridge but need to be brought back to room temperature before eating them.  So we will keep them in the fridge with the rest of the produce but please keep them on your counter to warm up before eating them.

We will store flowers separately so that they can stay in water.  We will double check at the time of delivery to to make sure we include your flowers.  They will stay most fresh if you leave some water for them beside your cooler if you are not home.  If you forget, we will wrap the stems in paper towel and plastic to keep them fresh a little longer.  If you are picking up at the farm, you will find your flowers in a flower bucket inside the cooler doors.  There will be paper towels and plastic bags beside them if you would like to wrap them up:).

The last change is a change in delivery date.  We would like to try delivering only one day a week for now to minimize time on the road and increase time spent on the farm.  We will try this week doing all home deliveries on FRIDAY.  It turns out there is no easy way to temporarily change delivery dates in the Harvie system.  For those who have Thursday home delivery, for this week, your account will still indicate Thursday delivery but it will actually arrive Friday.  Please let us know if there are any concerns with this for this or future weeks.

We have some great new products this week, yellow beans and fresh garlic.  We also have some member favourites back on the harvest list, arugula and carrots.  Finally, our collards are looking absolutely amazing!  Last year one of our market customers told us about a collards recipe that we are in love with, quick to make and absolutely delicious!  Here is a link:  https://cookieandkate.com/lemon-collard-greens-pasta/.

Wishing everyone a great week!

Kate and Greg.
