Farm Happenings for October 17, 2018

Posted on October 12th, 2018 by Eve Kaplan-Walbrecht

Farm news: Thanks to you, our CSA customers, we are able to avoid wholesaling, so that we can make a living wage from growing these vegetables. The reality is that we farm in one of the most expensive places in the country.  Our relatives in upstate New York are amazed that we pay 10 times the taxes for our house alone that they pay for a 55 acre farm.

But we love Long Island, which has some of the best soils in our country, and a great climate for growing.  Thank you again, for supporting our farm - Farmer Chris

Our third annual Oktoberfest, and last on-farm event for the season, is October 27-28. Hope to see you there!

This week we will meet Farm Trainee Phocas from Rwanda! “My name is Phocas NIYITEGEKA and I come from Rwanda which is in the Eastern part of Africa also known as “the Land of a Thousand Hills” because most of the country is covered by rolling, grassy hills. I completed a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture with a Major in Agronomy. I arrived at Garden of Eve early May and here I have been Involved in many different activities, but most of the time I have been responsible for the care and feeding of the 1,000 bird chicken flock, including feeding ,cleaning ,collecting and packing eggs.

Besides that I have also helped at the Farm Market roasting corn and selling it in the “Corn Shack” at our festivals. I have even learned how to operate a “potato cannon” and how to make it work by using air compressor.

I enjoy being here because I am learning something new, something more important to me and to the Rwandese community that will serve me well in the coming years, What I have seen at Garden of Eve has given me some inspiration to start a business using everything I have learnt, possibly with Chickens or vegetable farming.

One of the things I find most interesting about this farm is that there are so many varieties of plants and vegetables that I had never seen in my home country. At Garden of Eve Farm, they grow an incredible diversity of plants. there are more varieties of vegetables, herbs, and flowers with no use of chemicals, you wonder how those plants resist against pests.

It's a good experience to be here in the USA, to contribute to the development of the farm in general, and to work with the team here, I really appreciate that.
