Farm Happenings for Oct 21 & 22

Posted on October 16th, 2020 by Sarah Wiggins

Greetings from Fresh Start Farms!

As the seasons change and the colder weather approaches, you'll see the crops in your share change, too. Warm weather crops are on their way out to make way for storage vegetables like squash, carrots, potatoes, and winter greens. The great part about fall veggies is that you don't have to worry about eating them quickly, since most will store for quite some time (check out these
tips on storage)!

Each Fresh Start Farmer has roughly 1/2 acre of land to grow on and many do not have a greenhouse which means the end of the growing season is approaching for some and others with greenhouses have planted a second rotation of crops. You'll see more vegetables sourced from other local farms in order to keep a robust variety of options for your share.

Get ready for the Localvore share! This 5-week share will be offered from Nov. 17 through Dec. 15 and will be fully customizable and available for pick up or delivery.  Each week you'll be able to choose from local vegetables, cheeses, meats, eggs, mushrooms and pantry products to make up your share. You'll get to extend the farm share season and have fresh, local ingredients through the fall and the holidays. The share will go on sale next week!
Keep reading for a sneak peek at what will be in your share this week, new products, a recipe of the week, and featured cheese, pantry, and protein items!

Recipe of the Week

Heartbeet Chocolate Cake
Earthy-sweet beet puree gives this gluten free chocolate cake a red velvet hue but also lends so much buttery moistness that you'd never guess the cake is dairy-free as well. Get the recipe here.
