Lettuce Rejoice - October 20, 2022, I am Grateful for you

Posted on October 13th, 2022 by Tamara McMullen

Hello Veggie Lovers!

Welcome to Week 2 of the Winter Share.

Just a quick reminder: we are sending out loose root veggies (carrots, beets, radish, etc.), wrap them up and store them in the fridge so that they don’t get limp. No one likes a limp carrot, guys. This could be a great way to reuse your baby greens bags from previous weeks (our brilliant packing queen Amy came up with that gem of an idea).

Also, we are short several hundred cooler bags from the summer share which is no bueno. Please be superstars and bring your bags back every week.

What’s in the Box?

Fall carrots are the bomb.

Cold weather causes some plants, carrots included, to transform starches into sugars. You should get some. I’ve had people call them “candy carrots”, and one memorable child told me they “tasted like heaven”.
Other vegetables like radishes and kale also really come into their own at this time of year. I LOVE winter kale and put radishes in or on everything, seriously, tacos, stir fries, and buddha bowls, and toast. You should all try radishes with butter on toast. It’s a Parisian favorite for a reason, and you can’t argue with the French about food.

On the Farm

I love holidays that centre around food and the seasons and we had a great thanksgiving over here. I expressed some thanksgivings to you lovely folks a few weeks ago but wanted to repeat them in case they were missed. I wrote them after we’d gotten rained on for a few days and then the sun came back:

“And the sun, that beautiful, warm, life-giving ball of light in the sky made me remember how deeply grateful I am for this work, for this life, and for all of you.

I get the honor of growing the food that you nourish yourselves and your loved ones with. Sometimes I lose sight of this when I am deep in the muck, but this thanksgiving I will give thanks for each of you and the contributions you make to this tiny farm where my family and a group of kick-ass farmer women (mostly) coax nourishment and a living from the earth.

Thanks for being part of this farm, for believing in the power of local food, and for being generally great human beings. I hope feed you again next season.”

You know what else I’m grateful for? Our new puppy. Brian’s not a huge fan of dogs, but I reminded him that he got 4 pigs; I could have one dog. And now we have ‘Sunny’ our little Golden retriever buddy. Ruby is ecstatic (have I told you that she’s nuts for animals, and insects, basically anything that moves?), Jack is more reserved but he’ll probably like Sunny more once she stops biting his toes to wake him up in the mornings. I can’t say I mind, getting kids to wake up is HARD!

That’s all for now, happy eating until next time,
Farmer Tamara
