Administrative Details:

Hello Veggie Lovers!
Welcome to Week 1 of the Winter Share. Thank you so much for being part of our farm.

In preparation, I would strongly suggest that you add your pick-up time as a phone reminder. Otherwise as life gets busy you may forget.

We ask that you also remember to return your Firmly Rooted cooler bags and binder clips each week.

Finally, we are trying to reduce single use plastic where possible. Some of the root vegetables seem like good candidates for this and we are planning to pack them loose in your bags. When you get them home you will need to wrap them up in either bags or containers to store them in the fridge. Fridges act as dehydrators so if the veggies are stored loose in the fridge, they will quickly become limp. Stored properly they can last for months. Potatoes, onions, and garlic can be stored at room temperature in paper bags.

What’s in the Box?
All the flavors of fall!

I’m all about squash right now and we are offering both acorn and delicata this week. You probably know all about acorn squash, but delicata is something different. It can be eaten skin and all, we even eat the seeds. Our favorite method is to cut it into coins, or half moons and roast it. Here’s a recipe:

On the Farm
I have some slightly terrible news, and that is that our 2022 ginger crop is a bust. It is such a disappointment.

Let me give you some background. Our ginger seed (roots), come direct from Hawaii. Two years ago I had a newborn, was deeply under slept, and found myself sobbing on the phone to the CFIA agent that was holding my ginger hostage at customs and telling me that I needed all sorts of crazy expensive licences to get it into the country and onto my farm.

I had been buying this ginger seed for 6 years without a hitch, but rules change. Eventually I managed to get it onto the farm but I’d had enough of that nonsense!

Fast forward to 2022 when I decided to buy organic ginger roots locally and sprout them. I’d read articles that said it would work but low and behold it didn’t really. So here we are with a very minimal ginger crop. I sent some out last week for the final summer share, and I’ll send the rest out this week. I’m trying my best to portion it out fairly but guys, there just isn’t much.

All that to say, embrace garlic and onions because I have a-plenty, and I’ll try again next year.  Also, our sweet potato harvest this week was AWESOME, so you win some and you lose some.

Thanks for your patience.

Happy eating until next time,
Farmer Tamara
