WEEK 18~ Winter squash is our favorite thing right now....we have so many to choose from, and the best part - they are keepers!  They will last several months in a cool, dry spot.  Winter squash are wonderful roasted, made into breads, pies and soups.  Let us know how you use them!  It's also a great time to stock your pantry with our wonderful tomato chunks and juice.  These are my go-to in the winter when I want to make a soup, stew or sauce.  The chunks are even a great salsa base!  And looky, we did all the work for you!  :)

It's apple season and we LOVE to share these yummy local treats with you all.  The apples are not raised on our farm, but they are on a local farm nearby and the farmer doesn't spray often.  Most orchards spray daily to keep pest away.  Our provider is concerned about using pesticides and chemicals just like us, so he only sprays if there is a problem - or to keep disease at bay.  I know him personally and my children and I gather apples in his orchard every year.  We pick and eat them right off the tree.  I would much rather have an apples that is fresh picked and still has all the nutrients and minerals in tact than to buy apples from the store that are normally around 14 months old by the time you buy them.  These store bought apples are kept in a gas chamber to help the apple not break down - the only problem is, after three months, most of the nutrients and minerals are lost.  Remember what Granny used to say, "an apple a day, keeps the doctor away", only nowadays that isn't really true.  You would have to eat more than one apple to reap the same benefits.  Fresh picked, local, minimally sprayed is a much better answer!    And speaking of Granny, these red delicious apples are not the same red delicious that you find at the store.  These are light red with a greenish tone and have a sweet taste.  They are a great for cooking and baking.  The grimes golden are a smaller apple but are tart, crisp and sweet.  The Mutzu is my favorite apple!  It's a large, green apple that is yummy, crisp and sweet!  Hope you enjoy!
