What's Happening - July 13 & 15

Posted on July 7th, 2021 by Ashley Robertson

Greetings Farm Fans!!!

Fruit Bread of the Week

This week - our featured fruit breads are perfect for those of you who are longing for it to be fall!  We are featuring Pumpkin, Pumpkin Nut, and (my favorite) Pumpkin Chocolate Chip.

Coffee of the Week

Our featured coffee for the next two weeks is Costa Rica Candelaria Estate.  Roasted to a pleasant medium, this coffee is smooth with a round mouth feel and plump with flavors of poached pear, caramel and chocolate. The Candelaria Estate includes over 148 acres of coffee near the town of Palmares in Alajuela Province, which is part of Costa Rica's Central Valley. The Otto Kloeti family, of Swiss and Costa Rican heritage has operated the estate since 1965. The family and estate are very involved in the local community and have sponsored a school and soccer field, among other contributions.

Farmer Update

This week we were met with some truly tragic news.  One of our partner farms, Salisha's Delicious, was hit by overspray from a crop-duster working on some land a mile away.  Unfortunately, exposure to the glyphosate that was in the airplanes tanks not only means that her production has likely ended for the rest of the year, but could also potentially mean that her organic certification will be lost.  Salisha is one of our most dedicated organic growers and will not continue to farm conventionally.  While the implications of this disaster have yet to be fully realized, I do not expect that we will have any produce from Salisha for the duration of the year.  This means that I will be continuing to supplement with California produce as we move through the coming weeks.

On a positive note--Rick Lattin told me today that he expects that they will be harvesting their first melons in the next 7-10 days... Melon season is just around the corner!!!  He has listed his first slicing tomatoes and summer squash this week!  The Desert Farming Initiative has also listed their first slicing tomatoes!  And Scott Goodpasture is harvesting his first banana peppers!

We hope that you have a great week and as always...

Thank you for your continued support of Nevada Farmers!
