Farm Happenings for August 9-14 2021

Posted on August 8th, 2021 by Marnie Chown

Last year we got sweet corn from my aunt and uncle at Forman Farms and it was such a hit that we're going to do it again!

Look for corn in the swap and extras areas during the customization periods this week. If you don't see any and you want some, email me!

Check out their website and social media to learn more about my uncle Charlie and aunt Christine.

Some crop updates:

- Pat has been working hard at seeding more fall crops and setting up new beds. Pictured above is Pat and Damian checking to see if the irrigation is working properly!

- Potatoes and carrots are 2-3 weeks away.

- Eggplant and peppers are just starting now, we should have more volume available in the weeks to come.

- Strawberries are producing better than expected! Hopefully everyone will be able to get some but I can't control how things are allocated in Harvie...your best chance at getting a container is to modify your preferences. Make sure berries are at 5/5 and try lowering the rating on some other veggies!

Our beefsteak tomato production has not been great and we have had to make some hard decisions recently. Since we arrived here (2018) the greenhouse has been in rough shape due to a few factors: soil born diseases are present, high salinity in the soil and low fertility due to long term improper usage of the space.

We have done everything in our power to rectify the situation but now we realize that we either need to spend a TON of money to dig out the soil and replace it, or use cover cropping strategies to "renovate" the existing soil, which takes time.

Based on our beliefs, we are choosing the cover cropping route which means we will be tearing out all the plants in the next week and working to fix all of the imbalances.

We will still have cherry tomatoes and slicers available for the time being.

Our plan for the remainder of the season is to bring in beefsteaks from Forman Farms when they have enough for us, and make them available to swap into your share.
