Farm Happenings for August 10, 2018

Posted on August 5th, 2018 by Mike Nolan

Hello Friends

It has finally stopped raining up here and that is a relief. Each week when I log into Harvie I have to make an estimation of what produce will be ready for the CSA boxes by Friday.  You have until Tuesday morning at 8 to decide, make changes etc amd then I download the pick list and we get started on the root crop s first, and the more fragile crops at the end of the week like the greens and herbs.  It's important to me that you receive the freshest and best of what we have.  But last week 2 weeks have been a real challenge to do that becasue of the rain and clouds.  We should have easily had 2 pounds of beautiful tomatoes for each of you and more eggplant and better melons.  Alas this is part of the CSA too, taking what we have even if the weather conditions are making it difficult for us here at the farm.  I will be spoiling you with more tomatoes and you'll soon have the option to buy 10 pound cases at a time like we do every year.

This week promises to be better as the sun is blazing again and plants are growing.  I just set up the irrigation on the fall carrot block and pruned some tomato leaves in the greenhouse.  This week I will be posting some new videos about the tomato house and progress there as we fight off a couple of diseases and install the electric for the fans. Additionally we will be starting to accept signups for the fall CSA.  I will be working on the paperwork tomorrow and you should see some info coming about it soon.

The photo is of my daughter holding a little rooster named Captain America like he is a kitten.

He went along with it and then fell in love with her - get in line buddy!
