Week 10 Summer Bounty!

Posted on July 29th, 2018 by Mike Nolan

Hello Friends

When we were at the farmer's market yesterday in Mt. Pleasant it occurred to us that we need to add more tables to accommodate the variety of items that we have now. And more are coming! Tomatoes and some of the early peppers will make an appearance this week.  For now I will label them "Assorted Tomatoes,  Peppers or Eggplant" because we will be picking the first fruits regardless of variety.

I hope you liked the sweet corn last week - more to come this week and for a few more weeks too.  The picture above is from a few weeks ago when we covered the fall carrot block to heat up and "solarize" the soil. Weeds are the number one problem at the farm and this help make the top 1" of soil mostly weed free as they will be burned by the heat under the tarp.  Tomorrow we will pull the tarp back, seed the carrots, water them and then cover again for 3 more days. This will help with the carrot germination, and then the tarp comes off on Thursday. We will continue to cover sections of the farm throughout the next 10 years as we set up no till blocks and create permanent beds for vegetable production on the farm.

An Important Note About Picking Up Your Produce Each Week:

There were a number of our members who were missing their items this week.  And it was due to people taking too many of an item (peaches) or the wrong items all together like broccoli or Thai Basil.  I personally oversee the picking , packing and I do the deliveries each Saturday in DC. When I arrived at Palisades, a friend of a member stopped by and asked where she could "pick up her friends' CSA box".  She had no idea that she had to carefully a list that the member had created and pick the correct items.

Here's where the problem is:  I have to pay for these mistakes, all while losing credibility with the justifiably frustrated members who didn't get their items.

If you cannot pick up your CSA share then you need to teach your friends and family how to do it correctly.

Please pay attention. If I find out the culprit (and we usually do) then you will be billed for it.

In other news:  Your potatoes will be delivered this week- we will pick them tomorrow before the next round of rain comes in.  We had a record breaking rain in July, beating last years' record breaking July rain.

Please call or email me if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks
