Clear Skies for Week 17

Posted on September 20th, 2020 by Mike Nolan

First of all, thanks to you all for a smooth CSA week while I was a bit less available, and thanks for your patience as we're getting this delivery launched a little late tonight. My partner and I, and our two kitties, made it back safe and we're so happy to be here to enjoy a classic PA fall. While it feels a lot less apocalyptic here, the smoke from the West Coast fires have actually impacted our weather all the way out here. Particulates in the atmosphere caused dropping temperatures, and may have contributed to an early frost overnight on Saturday, which came as a complete surprise to the farmers. Sadly we lost all of our zinnias and dahlias, and we're taking a week off from bouquets while we re-calibrate. The good news is that we just cleaned all the cherry tomatoes from the fields a few days ago, and we haven't suffered any other major crop damages from the untimely cold snap. These days it's all about adapting and growing more resilient every day.

New This Week

There is nothing better than a sweet, crisp hakurei turnip in the fall. This is really their time to shine! Enjoy these sweet, crunchy turnips fresh for optimal flavor.

Turnip Greens are making an appearance to add some variety to our options this week. They're packed full of vitamin A and C, plus so many other minerals and nutrients that they earn a perfect score on the Aggregate Nutrient Density Index. So when you cook up some turnip greens this week, you can give yourself a pat on the back for taking such good care of yourself. It's science ;-) Here's another article with recipes, storage tips, and even more reasons why dark leafy greens like these will keep you feeling great.

The Fruit Share this week is a golden variety of apples. So good! One-time fruit shares are available as extras. We also have a few more quarts of peaches and Bartlett pears! This might be the last week, so get them while we still have them.

Share Your Thoughts...

We've expanded our extras offerings and farm partnerships a lot this season, and we'd love to hear about your experience with ordering extras each week. What are your thoughts on the variety and quality of products? Is the ordering process easy and clear? Is there anything we can do to improve the store? Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Just reply to this email anytime.

Have a wonderful week and be well,

Morgan + The Earth Spring Farm Team
