Farm Happenings for the week of July 9, 2023

Posted on July 9th, 2023 by Gail and Maurice Smith

Hello from DragSmith Farms.  Greetings to each of you, your families and friends.  We hope you were able to celebrate our Independence Day with fun gatherings and picnics.

We are happy to present you with a few veggies.  Who knew with all that snow last winter that we would continue to struggle with severe drought conditions. All we can do is share what we can produce. The photo of the week is the sad state we are dealing with.  Never in all the years of farming have we experienced this kind of dryness so early in the season.  We actually have to use the Case tractor to till the ground because it has a cab with windshield wipers.  The wipers are used to clear the fine dust from the windshield so we can see where to go.  Luckily, we have a bit of clay in the soil which holds the water.  The transplants like summer squash, broccoli, broccolini are growing and not wilting during the day. Although our onion crop is a goner. Seeded things like sweet corn is just sitting there trying to exist.

For the members joining us this year, I will clarify a few of the items on our list.  The Mississippi Greens is a combination of about 15-18 large micro greens cut into a salad mix.  You can use them as a salad, greens in your sandwich, toppings for soup or scrambled eggs etc.  You will find them served at restaurants like Pinoli, Mill Valley Kitchen, Owamni, Brickhouse, Fika, Dakota and many more.  The Wissota greens is a mixture of large field greens like chards, mustards, lettuces, kale and whatever else looks great.  We usually offer at least 3 different micro greens each week.  Micro greens are tiny plants and used to garnish or enhance the flavor of your favorite dishes.  The edible flowers will be 24 of colorful sizes and shapes of flowers to add in for color and flavor.

We ask that you return your farm share box to the drop site each week when you come to pick up.  We budget 3 boxes for each farm share.  It helps to reuse and recycle.  Also, we intend to use as little plastic as possible.  You will want to tend to your box as soon as possible to preserve its freshness.  We will be harvesting most of your vegetables on Monday and Tuesday so your produce will be fresh.

As always, have a great week. Reuse, recycle and appreciate your spot on this earth.  The staff issue is a huge problem.  If you would like to spend a day at the farm to help out it would be appreciated.  You are always welcome to visit.  Camp, fish, canoe or just hang out.  Course there is a never-ending patch of weeds that need tending!
