Farm Share Week 15 of 20

Posted on September 26th, 2021 by Gail and Maurice Smith

The feel of Autumn is upon us.  The vegetable crops are reflecting the season as well.  To our delight, we have a couple of new crops to introduce this week.  Tomatillos being the most exciting.  The above photo is a ripe tomatillo.  In the past we started a few plants in the greenhouse for customers that were salsa experts and wanted them in their gardens.  This year we decided to try our hand at tomatillo growing and placed numerous plants in our pepper and tomato area where they could be watered in the drought like conditions.  To say the least, they are amazing plants.  Take up lots of space.  Numerous fruits on every plant.  In fact they are so heavy the branches are weighted to the ground.  A bit difficult to pick for the unripe ones look like big puffy fruits as well, but, when you touch them you find just a tiny ball inside waiting to grow up.  Get out your favorite salsa recipe and enjoy.

The next crop to introduce is turnips.  A few of us have relatives that existed because of turnips and these people never wanted to see, hear or eat another turnip after they made it through the hardships of those days.  Lucky for us we don't have those memories.  They are loaded with Vitamin C and have cancer fighting qualities.  Korean and Japanese recipes are great inspiration. Pickled and added to soups.  Simply mashed into potatoes is a great way to give potatoes some added flavor.  Ferment them.....anyway, you get the point they have lots of uses.  We will send a Turnip Casserole recipe along with anyone that orders turnips....what could be better in Minnesota and Wisconsin then a good casserole recipe?

As always, have a great week and remember you are always welcome to visit the farm.
