Farm Share Week 1

Posted on June 20th, 2021 by Gail and Maurice Smith

Happy first day of summer everyone.  Happy Father's Day to all the Dads.  Your roll in our lives is a super important one.  Hopefully our newsletter is finding you healthy and happy to celebrate being together once again.

As a farmer at DragSmith Farms the sunset photo of the greenhouses is always beautiful and welcome.  That means we can finally come in from the field and eat supper! The heat of summer has been upon DragSmith Farms for a month.  This climate change business is especially confusing to us seasoned farmers.  So far we have weathered an extremely warm March (that did weird things to the growing of perennials), then onward to April that seemed okay with cool temperatures and rain, then onto a May with many 29 degree nights that kept the soil temperatures cold (seeds don't germinate) and transplanting baby plants would freeze to death, then we were whiplashed into 96 degree days for what seemed like weeks.  We have been unable to do the majority of our transplanting because it is to dry.  If we have this heat in August the plants can take it.  Their roots are way down into the ground where there is moisture.  Transplants only have tiny roots in the first 2 inches of soil and if it is dry, you die. Today, rain is on its way and we are certainly hoping for a nice gentle soaking 12 hours!

Now is the time check over your membership details such as preferences and delivery location.  Please be patient for the first couple of weeks.  We have changes here in delivery days coming up.  Our restaurants are starting to open back up and increasing their requests.  We may have to split some deliveries to different days because we can't get it all in one deliver van or Maurice just can't get to all the stops in one day.  Speedie or UPS may be doing some of them.  The past year has impacted our normal schedule and finding a licensed dependable driver has become a daunting affair.

The delivery schedule for the Twin Cities week of 6/20 (even if your computer says something else) will be sometime in the afternoon on WEDNESDAY.  Home deliveries (except Martina and Jean) will be by UPS or SPEEDIE  on Thursday.  On Farm, Northstar Bison, Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire areas will be on Thursday.

Please call or email us with any questions or problems.  Please return your empty box next week to the drop site to reuse for a future delivery.

Have a great week in the cooler temperatures!  Stop by sometime.
