Farm Share Week 13

Posted on September 13th, 2020 by Gail and Maurice Smith

It certainly did feel more like October this past week than September.  As a kid I remember going to school in September and suffering through many hot days.  Maybe they will come yet.  We did not get the plastic on greenhouse 3 and 4 as planned.  Saturday proved misty and windy.  It was a no go.

Frost was noticed both Wed. and Thurs. mornings. Covered the whole tomato crop with tarps just in case.  Glad we made the effort.  Lots of tomatoes to pick yet. We weeded the greens in greenhouse 4 in the mornings while it warmed up outside then headed out to pick Brussels Sprouts and Butternuts.  The large butternuts are going to need curing.  We carefully place them in large pallet bins.  They will be stored on the west side of our Red Shed in the warm sun for about two weeks.  This will help them achieve a nice tan skin to protect them while in storage.  We have 3 sizes of butternuts to harvest. Waltham (large) great for baking and soup.  Brulee (medium) great for stout personal-sized baking squash and Mininuts (small) for personal serving size....and they are cute (if squash can be cute).
