Farm Happenings for April 18, 2020

Posted on April 16th, 2020 by Sarah Brown

Hello!

While the spinach has disappeared for a couple weeks, we are welcoming Hakurai turnips back for the first time in months. These are delectably sweet (with a tiny little kick), and have a uniquely crispy, silky texture. They are great fresh or roasted.

Also, coming on very strong during this consistently warm week is....Asparagus! We've had some as an extra for the past few weeks, but now we can offer it more broadly. Asparagus is such an incredible food - so abundant (when many things are not), nutritious, delicious, and easy to cook. Unfortunately, the harvest window is relatively short (maybe 2 months), after which we let the spears fly so they can open into wispy, lacy fronds and feed the roots for next year's harvest. The asparagus patch is arguably one of my favorite little spots on the farm; It's tidy mulched paths, clean composted mounds, hundreds of purple headed shoots peaking through. It's packed full of energy, and represents a full commitment to this place. We've been weeding, feeding, mulching, and watering the asparagus for about five years now, in great anticipation. It's been a practice of delayed gratification, and now we are gratified in the abundance! We're so happy to be able to share this special food with you.

And of course, there is still Kale, Parsley and the last of the braising greens. There will be more to offer in the near future, as the mild days have been perfect for transplanting. In the field, we have baby fennel, lettuce, kale, broccoli, spinach, beets, carrots, peas.  I've been busy weeding and irrigating the first transplants, while trying to find time to continue mowing/incorporating cover crop and making new beds. Weather like this puts us on notice for the race! I can't remember feeling quite so busy in mid-April in recent years, but as they say, "you gotta make hay while the sun shines."

If you haven't already, please considering joining our main season CSA share program (beginning in June). Due to increased demand, we've added 20 shares for pick-up on Saturdays at our market booth, where we'll be primarily distributing pre-orders (farm stand boxes) and CSA shares. The primary advantages to a CSA share over Farm Stand boxes are priority availability for the customer, and a season long commitment for all of us. Regardless of how you choose to shop and eat, we are grateful to have you along. Your support keeps the gears turning, and gives us reason to squeeze every last drop of sunlight from these lovely Spring days.

Be Well,

Conner + Sarah
