Special Notes for Friday Members:

CSA Pick Up: Week of July 4th

We are hopeful that you received our email a few weeks ago detailing how the Friday CSA pick up will be structured for the week of July 4th. Given that the college is closed on both the 4th and 5th, we have arranged with Project SHARE to have the CSA pick up on Wednesday, July 3rd (from noon until 6:30pm). You will receive a request to customize your share on Friday June 28th. We will resume the normal Friday CSA pick up on July 12th.  Please email Jenn Halpin with any questions at halpinj@dickinson.edu.

Missed Pick Up

Friday members who miss pick up at Project SHARE are welcome to come to the farm between 7:30am and 4:30pm on the following Monday or Tuesday to retrieve their customized vegetable share.  CSA Shares are stored in our walk-in cooler located in the lower barn until the end of the day each Tuesday. Members who wish to pick up their CSA share over the weekend are requested to please email Will Nelson (nelsonw@dickinson.edu) to coordinate logistics.

Field Notes

After rain comes sun, and after sun comes more rain. Luckily this week, we had a mix of both to keep our feet muddy and our plants happy. We’ve been in the fields on sunny days, had a beautiful Wednesday at the Farmers Market, and have been able to organize and prepare the barns in the rainy weather to ensure a smooth transition into the summer months. Our fields are full of various stages of growth and many different colors. The squashes have blossomed, we’ve been trellising tomatoes, and this week fennel and kohlrabi have joined the harvest.

Because the fields are now in full production, we are quickly moving all of the growing out of our greenhouses. The only thing we will grow in the green houses during the summer are tomatoes. We rotate which one of the three greenhouses grows tomatoes, to prevent the spread of disease that could harm our plants. This year, the tomato plants are located in the greenhouse named, Ghana. They will start producing tomatoes in the next few weeks! We are also having a fourth new greenhouse built this summer, and construction began early this week.

We also welcomed two calves to the farm this week, making four new cows for the season, with a few more to come! All of the mothers have been healthy and happy, and the babies are adjusting extremely well! If you see them in the pasture, usually the calves are playing and sleeping together in the tall grass. The photo above is of White Face and her baby, if you couldn’t tell they were related!

We are looking forward to more abundant harvests to share with you. Thank you for your constant support of the Dickinson College Farm!

Warmly,

Lindsay (Farm Apprentice)
