Tuesday CSA: Dickinson College Farm Field Notes for Week of June 24th

Posted on June 23rd, 2019 by Jenn Halpin

This is the sixth week (depending on when students started) of the summer farm crew and we are all still going strong! Although we were promised heavy rain and thunderstorms, we somehow managed to avoid the predicted bad weather (for the most part) throughout the week. On Monday a new crew member (Emma) was welcomed by all of us and we spent the majority of the day weeding carrots and hoeing wet soil. Tuesday was filled with several jobs such as weed whacking, transplanting squash, weeding and clearing the greenhouse. Wednesday was a fun day: although it was a hot one, our morning consisted of harvesting squash and zucchini and then our team of strong, independent women lifted heavy straw and mulched squash. Definitely a workout! Finally, Thursday consisted of more weeding because that’s what weeds
do, always come back. More so, it poured during lunch time, but sprinkled gently on us in the afternoon to keep us refreshed.

Highlights of the week: The farm got a new face lift and looks more polished than ever. Now our barn is a brighter red. Furthermore, a couple of Amish guys built a new greenhouse for us in just two days (pretty impressive).
