Tuesday CSA: Dickinson College Farm Field Notes for Week of June 17th

Posted on June 15th, 2019 by Jenn Halpin

After rain comes sun, and after sun comes more rain. Luckily this week, we had a mix of both to keep our feet muddy and our plants happy. We’ve been in the fields on sunny days, had a beautiful Wednesday at the Farmers Market, and have been able to organize and prepare the barns in the rainy weather to ensure a smooth transition into the summer months. Our fields are full of various stages of growth and many different colors. The squashes have blossomed, we’ve been trellising tomatoes, and this week fennel and kohlrabi have joined the harvest.

Because the fields are now in full production, we are quickly moving all of the growing out of our greenhouses. The only thing we will grow in the green houses during the summer are tomatoes. We rotate which one of the three greenhouses grows tomatoes, to prevent the spread of disease that could harm our plants. This year, the tomato plants are located in the greenhouse named, Ghana. They will start producing tomatoes in the next few weeks! We are also having a fourth new greenhouse built this summer, and construction began early this week.

We also welcomed two calves to the farm this week, making four new cows for the season, with a few more to come! All of the mothers have been healthy and happy, and the babies are adjusting extremely well! If you see them in the pasture, usually the calves are playing and sleeping together in the tall grass. The photo above is of White Face and her baby, if you couldn’t tell they were related!

We are looking forward to more abundant harvests to share with you. Thank you for your constant support of the Dickinson College Farm!

Warmly,

Lindsay (Farm Apprentice)
