Update from The Milkhouse

This week will likely mark the end of grazing season for us at the Milkhouse. We will continue to have the cows out on pasture, but they’ll be eating bales of hay or baleage. This practice allows for the cows to continue spreading fertility-their own manure, and any parts of the bale they may reject (there’s always some leftover stems they choose not to eat!). Bale feeding also allows for some passive reseeding of pastures. Seeds fall out of the baled feed and the cows trample in those seeds.

By mid or late November (the timing is weather dependent-if the ground is really squishy we’ll move ’em in early, if it’s dry they can continue to ‘bale graze’ on pastures for a while) the cows will move into the barns, and while they will continue to have outdoor access, it’ll be limited to areas proximate to the barns. While we don’t really have an off season in dairy farming, the winter is somewhat more restful. We’re looking forward to that, but we can hardly believe that we’re just about there!
