Hey Farm Share Members! We've packed some fall favorites in your shares this week. It's the time of year for roasted brussells sprouts - simply trim and slice in half, toss with olive oil, salt and pepper (or any other seasoning mixes you like), spread on baking sheet in single layer, cut side down and bake in 400 degree oven about 20-30 mins. until browned on the outside and toasted on the bottom. Braised greens with sauteed garlic, lemon juice, olive oil - can't beat it! It's also the time of year for hearty soups, we have ingredients available for purchase, young mutton sausage links, ground beef, delicious Back 40 Bread and different cheeses that will go great with your fall fare, check your email notification on Wednesday for availability.

Harvie has made some improvements to the Member Profile area of your account, the illustration below highlights the navigation buttons. If you're having trouble making changes you can email farmers@daybreakgrowersalliance.com and we'll be happy to assist you.

Update from Meadwosweet Farm

We at Meadowsweet Farm are delighted to be finishing up our second full year owning and managing this land, continuing the legacy of this well-loved Waldo County farm. Altogether it has been a good season for us, a season of growth, learning, and progress towards our visions for the farm. We are so grateful for the weather we've had; after three drought years in a row, finally this year there was abundant, steady rainfall right through the summer. The pastures grew beautifully and consistently, and as a result, the animals are sleek, fat, and shiny going in to winter.

We love to just sit and spend time around our sheep and cattle at this time of the year; they are so calm, gentle, no longer distracted by the urgency of spring and summer or by the responsibility of rearing young calves and lambs. They are our partners in managing this land, and we care about our relationships with them. Most are friendly and will come right up for a scratch behind the ears. We see it as a symbiotic relationship, where we take care of them, yes, but also they look after us. They uphold their end of the deal unconditionally, and we must work hard to do the same on our part.

We hope you enjoy these few pictures we've sent along, and hope they may provide an accurate glimpse into what we do here at the farm. We always welcome visitors, so if you'd like to stop by someday and learn more, please just reach out. We thank you for your support through the Daybreak Growers' Alliance, which has been a great partnership for us this year. May we be able to serve you and the greater community for many years to come.

This weeks Fruit Share:

This weeks fruit share is a mix of a bunch of tasty desert and fresh eating apples from Teltane Farm in Monroe. These beautiful apples are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. The Fulfords focus on unique varieties that thrive in an organically managed orchard. Check you box for the name of the varieties you're trying:

Brand X  **( AKA Gould Hill Cross, originated as a fortunate seedling in the right place at the right time. Found within an orchard row in New Hampshire , favored by picking crews as a ‘treasure with a knockout flavor ’ . Decidedly obvious parents are Red Delicious and Macintosh. Taste is better than either parent.  Smooth dark cherry red over a very crisp juicy sweet dessert / cider apple . Hard to grow clean, but did very well this year with improved management ).

Red Mac-in-Spy *** (This one is a new offering.  quite out of the ordinary, as it combines all of the better attributes of Northern Spy with what may be the old fashioned Macintosh .A very large red spy shaped apple with the snap of Northern Spy and a hint of Mac . The yellowish flesh is very solid and loaded with flavor. Long storing , disease and insect resistant apple . Tree grows like a Spy)

Rome Beauty **-(the original Rome)sweet and highly fragrant dessert variety , becoming partly or almost entirely cherry red with a waxy smokey bloom , fine-grained greenish to cream colored flesh. excellent dessert, sauce and cider . Can be stored well into January )

Liberty - ***( A recently introduced disease resistant tree of semi conical fruit with dark cherry red skin, firm white sweet / tart flesh. Great fresh eating and cider quality)

Appaloosa**( From Washington State 40’s -50’s??, Medium sized round to oblate. Beautiful warm soft red to semi dark red skin with high dessert quality, tender white sub acid , very pleasing textured crisp flesh . Almost disease free trees can be heavy bearers. Stores into December ).

NY Crunch***(Originally bred as one of the many disease resistant varieties , “just a number at Geneva NY”, but not released so it begged a name to introduce it as a smokey dark red / purple and partly streaked dessert apple . Excellent flavored crunchy flesh easily sells itself ).
