Farm Happenings for July 24, 2018

Posted on July 23rd, 2018 by Daniel Chappell

It's hard to believe it's already week 4! I'm happy to say that the fields recovered quite well from the hail and are full of great new growth. The zucchini's were one of the most significantly effected, and I think this week I may just have very small ones which I'll bundle in 2-3 to equal one regular one.

You'll also see the first kohl-rabi of the season this week from my neighbors at Eagle Creek Farm. John tells me that they are looking pretty banged up from the hail, but the taste will still be great. If you've never had kohl-rabi before I find it has a flavour somewhat similar to broccoli stems. I often eat it raw, but I've also enjoyed it roasted and cooked in soups.

This week we also see the first few tomatoes and snap peas of the season. It really is just the first few, so not everyone will be able to get them this week but I think I remember that Harvie will try to give different people these limited veggies each week until I have enough for everyone.

Now that the fruit has started to flow in from BC, you'll see that I put some fruit that I have extra of each week as an optional add on if you're interested. Organic fruit is rather expensive but I give you as good a deal as I can manage on the fruit.

This week I will be putting my last seeds in the ground for the year, which will give us the last salad greens at the end of that share and some of the veggies that will make their way into the fall share. I've really been quite happy with the amount of rain my farm has gotten since the beginning of June, and growth has really taken off in the last couple of weeks, giving me alot of confidence in the variety of veggies I'll be able to put in the share as August comes around the corner!

Have a great week!
