Farm Happenings for June 17, 2022

Posted on June 12th, 2022 by Michael Hoke

Welcome this week to our new subscription members who are just starting to receiver your boxes!  While we are still solidly in our spring season we are seeing serious grown and some new crops coming in this week.  We have lots of hoophouse grown carrots and beets and our first outdoor bunches of green onions.  Our annual herbs like dill and cilantro are amazing this week and we have plenty of mint as well.

We continue to do a lot of transplanting and weeding on the farm which seems to be our pattern weekly for most of the summer.  We have started seeding our fall brassicas like our storage cabbage and some late summer broccoli and cauliflower and we've planted our second succession of melons and watermelons.  I don't like to make predictions, but I feel this will be the summer of melons on the farm!

A quick note about our greenhouse tomatoes so far:  We have divided them into 3 "sizes".  Cherry tomatoes are in pints and we have what we call "salad tomatoes" which are really tasty and great eaten whole or cut in half but really too big to call cherry tomatoes.  These we have in quarts as well as our regular red tomatoes and a bunch of different coloured and heirloom tomatoes that you will find the in the "tomato quart".  The yellow and purple tomatoes have amazing flavour but are often a bit misshapen or ugly!
