High Summer in Georgia

Posted on July 10th, 2019 by Lisa Merva

High Summer Greetings!

Whew! It's getting steamy out there... the farmers are starting to wilt a bit but so far the veggies are doing just fine. This week we've got a few of the ultimate #1 refreshing summertime fruits... Watermelons! We don't have enough for everyone yet, but hang in there! If all goes according to plans, we'll have more the following week.

We also have an exciting offering of an early apple name "Redfree" from Ed Janosik of Sundance Farm in Danielsville. These apples are firm and sweet for a summertime apple, and great for fresh eating. They are available in very limited quantities so they aren't going in the shares, but are available to purchase as an Extra.

For those of you with an Independent Baking Co. Bread Share, your loaf this week will be....

French Country!

Mixed grain bread of the French countryside with stoneground heirloom wholegrain wheat, spelt, and rye flours.

The Collective Harvest staff got to visit Fry Farm last week... and we didn't want to leave! Nestled in an idyllic location down a long dirt road in Bethlehem, the 12 acre property includes a few dozen vegetables beds, blueberries, several fig trees, a couple spring-fed ponds and three good sized chicken runs in the woods. Most of Fry's flock is a peaceful, productive breed called "Golden Comet" and if you haven't tried these eggs yet, well... you're in for a treat! The eggs have this amazing dark orange-gold yolk and they are literally the tastiest eggs I've ever had.

Vicky Fry gave us a tour of the farm that she and her family have built from scratch, and the CH staff had the opportunity to pick the brain of this very experienced farmer. We oohed and ahhed over the biggest, healthiest tomato plants we have ever seen and learned about the custom soil/nutrient blend Vicky has developed for them over the years. In the picture above, she is answering our many questions about their impressive mushroom-growing setup... Keep your eyes peeled for mushrooms available from Fry Farm this fall!

Without further ado... Let's eat!
