Farm Happenings for July 9, 2019

Posted on July 5th, 2019 by Jodi Danyo

New this Week:  Golden Beets, Carrots, and Garlic!

Last week, we began harvesting our summer squashes so we thought we would take a few minutes to review our summer squash line-up for this season!  Here are a few of our favorites:

Goldy Zucchini - Sweet & flavorful, our favorite yellow squash.  Goldy will make a summer squash lover out of even the pickiest eater!

Green Machine Zucchini - This name could not be any more true.  These plants produce a ton of perfect standard dark green zucchinis.  Delish!

Costata Romanesco Zucchini - An Italian heirloom variety, this squash has green and white ribs, and a slightly nutty flavor.  Jodi's favorite squash - hands down.  Don't be intimidated by its size, Costata remains tender at a slightly larger size than other zucchinis.  If picked too small, the fruits shrivel.

Yellow Crookneck Squash (not pictured) - A classic heirloom squash, picked small (about 6") for best quality.  Amazing buttery flavor and creamy texture with bumpy skin (like warts, only good warts) and a crooked neck!

Eight Ball Zucchini & Ronde de Nice - Cute round zucchini!  These are perfect for stuffing.  We pick them at about 3-4" in diameter for best quality.  I bet you can guess which one in the photo is eight ball!

Jaune et Verte & G-Star Patty Pan Squash - Kids (and some adults) just love these star ship squashes!  They are sweet and nutty, perfect for your favorite zucchini/squash recipe or for stuffing.

For biweekly customers, we will be continuing our Member Appreciation giveaway this week!

During the very busy summer months, we struggle to balance the time demands of crops and farm with the demands of home and family.  We know that we are not alone in this struggle!  So, we decided this week to give you all the gift of "thyme" in the hopes that you have had some down time this July 4th holiday to spend relaxing with family and friends.

As many of you already know, we grow lots of potted veggies, herbs, and flowers for home gardeners each spring.  If you did not receive a thyme plant last week, please select a thyme plant available in flats at your pick-up location, and check out our blog post on all the uses for your thyme:

This Week on Our Farm...

One thing you must know about farmers is that we are always complaining about the weather..."It's too hot!" "It's too cold!" "It's raining too much!" "It's raining too little!"  We're just never happy.  And, what were not happy about this week is that despite the rain everywhere else, all the thunderstorms this week have missed us and now the farm is very, very dry given all the heat!

This week, we sadly said good bye to the sugar snap peas for the season.  We had a fantastic harvest this year, but inevitable they cannot withstand the heat.  We're really excited about starting to harvest CARROTS though!

Have a great week ahead everyone!
