This week on the farm things seem to have shifted to more fall like weather and feel.  The mornings are cool and the days are hot.  This is the time when fall meets summer an all the things are ready at once.  We will again have melons but will have some cooler weather crops in there like turnips and collards or kale.

Our baby chicks came in about 2 weeks ago now and they are all on pasture now and doing great.  A reminder that we have chicken for sale! Most of them right now are in the 2.5-4 lb range.

Here is what you might see in your box this week:

Cantaloupe for all this week- They are ripe and need to go in boxes!  If it smells very sweet from the outside it is ready to eat. If it smells like it could go a day or 2 more it will sweeten up on your counter. Enjoy!

cucumbers- Still pumping out cucumbers!

Thelma Sanders acorn squash- This is a nice mild squash that you can easily roast in the oven. If you are not ready to turn on your oven, you can keep it on your counter!  It is that time of year when squash needs to come out of the field but it doesn't seem like it!

pie pumpkin- These are actually pie pumpkins!  All you have to do it cut them in half or in quarters and steam or roast them (face down) so the meat gets very soft.  Then you scoop that out and use it as you would any pupkin puree (puree it in blender or with an immersion blender). You can freeze it, too, to make pies or muffins with later.

yellow onions

garlic bulb (1 large or 2 small)

tomatillos- Take husks off, wash and then cut in half. Roast in a pan in oven with garlic, onions, salt and olive oil. After they have bubbled and roasted blend with cilantro, lime abnd jalapeno for a really great salsa verde!

tomatoes, both large and cherries- All the tomatoes this wee! This is the week for them, the cooler weather is making them all turn and in a  couple weeks they will most likely be done.  Enjoy the summer flavors!

Roasted Tomato Salsa

peppers, 2- Red or orange bell, red or orange italia (carmen)- These are sweet peppers. They hold very well in the fridge, but have so many purposes we find we use them everyday.  Great for kids lunches, diced with onion in eggs, any stir fry or even grilled for burgers!

Jalapenos- Lots of jalapenos!- Use in salsa, in any dish you want spice or dry them for later!

Jalapeno Poppers

10 minute pickled jalapenos

Snap Bean mix- Mostly Dragon's Tongue Heirloom beans this week. So sweet eaten raw with hummus or other dip. They are also great steamed or seared or grilled.

Basil bunch- Wash right before using! Splash up has made the leaves dirty! Do no refrigerate, but keep in a jar of water, in a plastic bag or container.

Collard Bunch- Its that time of year!  You can get one of our smoked hocks and cook these with onions, garlic, stock and the hock in a dutch oven.  So good!!

Southern Style Greens (including beeet greens)

Broccoli or Cauliflower- Some nice heads coming out of the fields and into your boxes this week.

Red Beet Bunch- These beets are so pretty!  Make sure to use the tops, too, for sauteing or putting a stir fry or eggs like swiss chard.

Roasted Beet and Cucumber Salad

Red Radishes- Such beautiful radishes! Slice thin on a sandwich or chop with cucumbers to make a fresh salad.

Cucumber and Radish Salad

swallowtail on our zinnias!

Willem enjoying summers sweetness

Edwin helping with our annual watermelon toss!

Have a great week!
