Hello Members!

What a fall it has been!  We have been fully takin advantage of the weather by getting lots of things done outdoors like cleaning up the fields, planting garlic for next year, planting strawberries for next year and getting all the crops out of the field that are frost sensitive. The animals are loving this warm sunny weather, too!

If you did not see our separate email about our Open House Farm Day:

THIS SATURDAY, October 16th 11-3

We have decided to have an open house where you can come anywhere from 11-3 to tour the farm, take a hayride, pick some pumpkins, and see our animals!

NO rsvp necessary. No dogs please but kids very welcome!

1150 35th ave Amery, Wi 54001

Hope to see you here!

What you might see in your box this week:

cilantro- A nice fresh bunch of cilantro to garnish all your fall soups!

Coconut Curry Soup (garnish with cilantro!)

Cilantro Soup

collard greens- cut out the rib and cook low and slow or you can also just stir fry them.  They will become more tender the longer they are cooked.

ham and bean soup

acorn/delicata squash- The acorn are dark blue/black and the delicata have an ediblae skin and are very sweet.  These are cured and will store unless blemished for quite sometime on your counter.

Roasted Squash Salad (use other greens instead!)

Leeks- The leeks look really great this year. Best in soups, but also sauteed as an onion sub.

Leek and Acorn Squash Soup

Potatoes- Kennebecs are white and store well.  Keep in the dark, in a paper bag or cupboard so they do not turn green.  You do not have to peel potatoes!  That is where lots of the nutrients are!

Pac choi- I know this vegetable is not the most common place, but it takes on flavor really well and holds up to sautes and stirfries adding a nice crunch.  Store in plastic bag in the frigde so they do not go limp.

Zesty mix- .75 lb! we have a lot of this stuff and not many people wanted it.  We think it is best used as a fresh salad loaded with things like roasted veggies, rice or quinoa, tuna, fermented vegetables, a fresh herby dressing, or/and bacon!  But you can also cook this down and eat it with potatoes, rice or other dish.

Salad Mix- enjoy!

Red Head Lettuce- either oscarde or red butterhead or both.  unfortunatley, our romaine got some sort of fungal wilt this week that we don't understand but we were not able to harvest it.... This lettuce is prewashed, but we definitely recommend washing it once you chop it up as there is dirt inside the head we are not able to wash out.

Purple Diakon- These are a beautiful (inside and out!) radish that is best for shaving onto a salad, turning into a ferment with cabbage or carrots and it will also store more months in your fridge.  Enjoy!   THe kids even like them as they are not spicy at all.  So crispy and kinda sweet.

adaptable fermented carrots and diakon

Salad Turnips- The tops on these are not the best but the roots are still as lovely as ever!  I have been really liking them pan roasted with brussels sprouts, bacon grease and tamari.  They are really great when slightly glazed and a little soft.

Carrots- Fresh orange carrots for you! I grew these as a last ditch effort to have orange carrots after many failed attempts as getting them to germinate in the drought of July.  So, here they are! Sweet, fresh, crisp and a little small.  Top to keep them crispy.

Pepper[- last week for peppers??? probably. hope you've enjoyed the sweetness of the red and orange peppers.

BEETS! We are sorry that we were only able to harvest about half of the beets we needed and they are SMALLLLLLLLLL. can't win them all. You can eat the greens too if you want!

Broccoli- Nice fall heads for you again this week. Finally broccoli worth writing home about after the summer drought!
