Fall CSA Box #15 (Click continue Reading to see whole newsletter)

Posted on September 20th, 2021 by Ayla Dodge

Hello Members!

This is the 2nd to last box of the main season! (last box for b week half shares- thank you, thank you!!).  Fall shares start in 2 weeks on October 7th. This fall has shaped up to be a beautiful and vey nice weather one.  We've been getting the rain we need and the temps have been warm for some really quick growth of the greens and fall items.  This week you will see brussels sprouts and leeks in the box.  Next week we will plan to have celeriac and maybe rutabaga (it did not do as well this year due to disease).  We still have tomatoes and peppers although dwindling now and the squash looks and tastes great this year.  You will be getting delicata again this week in addition to another squash.

You may have noticed, but we are not having a harvest party for the 2nd year in a row now.  We are bummed, and always have a great time seeing all of you, but there are too many factors that are making it difficult to see happen this year.  Also our 10 month old is proving to take up most of my time and prepping for a harvest party is no joke around here (clean up....) so we plan for next year!  if you are in the area, please let us know and you can visit the farm!

We have apples for sale again this week.  The Regents are really sweetening up nicely!  They are both crisp and fresh.  I love local fall apples!  We will have then next week, too.

Lastly, we have some nice large frozen roaster chickens in the freezer.  They are seriously smazing roasted and eaten with winter squash potatoes and carrots. just sayin' :)

Hello mushroom lovers and farm supporters!

Somehow our final week with you has arrived.  We are ending with our signature mushroom for you again – shiitake!  We’ve only got a few weeks left of these lovely log-grown mushrooms. Shiitake are robust, meaty, and full of umami flavor.

We have loads and loads of fourth year shiitake logs still, if anyone wants to get some for a garden border or just to have around. Drop us a line if you’re interested.

You are also getting a jar of our Smoked Shiitake Butter. This will be good for about 2-3 weeks in the fridge. If you aren’t planning to eat it right away you can pop it in the freezer – they freeze really well. Just put it back in the fridge a day or two ahead of when you’re ready to eat it. Our recommendation is to bake some squash (especially delicata) and put a big healthy scoop of butter on that. It’s amazing!

Enjoy your mushrooms and your butter, and hopefully we’ll get to provide you CSA mushrooms again next year!

Here is what may be in your box this week:

Potatoes- russets or other- These potatoes are a little small this year as we had to mow them down before they were done growing due to an absolutely insane pest year.  Great for roasting and baking.

Leeks- 2-3- Potato leek soup anyone?  Our leeks are generally looking awesome this year!  so good in a soup and also in any savory baked dish, too.

Potato Leek soup with dill

Brussels Sprouts- .75 lbs- Yields on these were not the greatest so you are not getting .lb I have hoped for.  cut the stump off and that will allow any bad yellow or brown outer leaves to fall off, too.  THen you can either roast or cook them whole or halved.  We like to put them on a sheet tray with onions, garlic, bacon grease and salt.  They are so great if you let them caramelize a bit, don't undercook!!

Roasted Brussels Sprouts with bacon

Salad Mix- .5lb- fall is a great time to get back into greens!  This will keep for up to 2 weeks.

Garlic-Small bulbs, but they pack a punch!

Delicata and Butternut (half shares) futsu or other (full shares)- We wanted to make sure half shares get the best squash on the market- delicata and butternut.  They serve different culinary purposes but are both amazing.  These are not really properly cured and will not hold on the counter for more than a couple weeks.

Butternut and Leek Soup

Cherry Tomatoes- Still pumping out tomatoes!

Big Tomatoes- a few- Last week for these!

Peppers (Full shares)- Red carmens/orange or red bells

Arugula- Spicy, crisp and fresh.  Great tossed into a salad or added to a pizza after baking.

Dill- Potato leek and dill soup!!!

Radishes- These are really nice and watery and not too spicy!

Rainbow Carrots (half shares)- Great roasting.  Not the best snacking carrot as they are a bit tougher than a normal orange carrot, but they sweeten up ALOT after cooking.

Herb Roasted Carrots and Potatoes

Snap Bean Mix- last week for these?  I am sure you are done with beans!

Popcorn!! (5-6 in a bunch for popping and decoration!)- If you use these fro decoration for at least one month or maybe until after halloween, then they will be dried down enough to take them off the cob and pop them on the stove!! Enjoy!

Thank you to all the half share members whose boxes are now over for the season.  We could not do it without you!

We had a great group of young kid out to the farm on Friday!

Here they are digging rainbow carrots!

What might be in the box next week?

Rutabaga?

celeriac?

onions

brussels sprouts

leeks

herb bundle

pac choi

spinach

salad mix

pepper

beets

popcorn (half shares)

winter squash varieties

kale bunch?

Have a great week!
