Posted on September 12th, 2021 by Ayla Dodge

Hello!

Week 14! Time is flying by with only 2 more weeks left of the main season CSA.  If you are a half share this week, you will be getting one more box in 2 weeks (unless you signed up for a fall share!) The greens are really looking nice out there with all this rain and cool weather.  Tomatoes in the field will see their last picking this week we think.  Frost is right around the corner and fall crops like brussels sprouts and leeks will make their appearance next week.  This week you will see cabbage, radishes and turnips along with summer crops still.

We are also adding Fall Regent and Haralson Apples as an add-on option. These apples are picked by us from down the road on my mother in laws farm.  Never sprayed, (not certified Organic but organic) 35 year old standard apple trees. Its a good year for apples! Regents have a white interior and are sweet and tart.  Harolsons are tarter and a little crisper and are good eating if you like tart as they have a great texture and great for baking also. 5# bags for $13.50.

We just got a nice new batch of whole frozen chickens back from the processor if you would like to order some for winter meals.  Check out our chicken info HERE

Here is what you may find in your box this week:

Tomatoes- The tomatoes are really slowing down now with the cold and dewy nights.  This may be the last week for them.

Cherry Tomatoes- But the cherry tomatoes are going strong!

Peppers, sweet and/or bell- Peppers are all turning colors now and you will see them for the next week or 2

Hot peppers- The habaneros turned orange and they look nice!  They are hot!  But great in a quick salsa or mashed with vinegar and salt for a small amount of hot fridge sauce.

Radishes- These are beauties this week!  Crisp, spicy and not too big. Top them for better storage.  Will need to be washed again.

Salad Turnips- You can eat the greens too!  Fresh turnips are great in a sandwich for crunch or on a salad.  You can grill or roast them, too.

Frilly zesty Greens mix- This is a nustard heavy mix that can be used for fresh eating or you can braise with a little stock or water.  They are really good for you and we enjoy them with a fresh herby dressing!

Green herb dressing

Arugula- This zingy spicy green is so great mixed into the zesty mix or wilted on a pizza, with risotto or on a sandwich (last blt andyone?!)

arugula pesto (can add the basil in too!)

Cabbage- Mostlly red and some green, too- This cabbage will keep in yoru fridge for months, but you will just have to take the outer leaves off that have become wilty.  The inside will remain crisp.

Braised Cabbage and Carrots

Carrots (a mix of orange and rainbow)- You will get either all orange or a mix of colors this week in a bag.  The tops have gotten too brown and stringy for nice bunches.  Carrots keep months, too if you keep them in a plastic bag in the fridge.  But they taste the best when they are straight out of the ground.

Snap Beans Mix- Dragon's Tongue, Yellow Wax and Green Beans- A whole pound!-What a nice mis we have for you this week.  Yellow wax, heirloom dragons tongue and green bean mix.  These keep well over a week in the plastic bag.

Seared Green Beans

eggplant-Maybe the last of the season?- These eggplant have made a bizarre comeback after the colorado potato beetle moved on in late summer.  however, the cool nights make them grow very slowly, but the plant look as large and beautiful as ever! It makes it hard to pull them.

Eggplant Pesto Pasta

Basil- The last hurrah for basil this year.  The plants are actually looking the healthiest they have all season, but the frost will take them out in the next week or 2 depending on when it comes.

Delicata and Thelma Acorn Squash- A very nice mix of squash this week!  the delicata look great this year!  They are an edible skin squash and are truly the sweetest squash out there.

Maple Roasted Delicata Squash (can use thelma acorn too!)
