Farm Happenings for September 5, 2023

Posted on September 3rd, 2023 by Rae Strobel Barr

Does Labor Day mark the unofficial beginning of fall?  It usually feels that way to me.   The heat waves still happen but the sorghum and  corn are done growing and begin drying in the fields....watermelon season wraps up....and the fall greens and squashes start to make their appearance.   Seems like everything has been about a week late for us since the spring Equinox, but as we approach the fall equinox I am feeling like we are caught up.   Sometimes the hot summer days feel like they never end.  Even as we experience a heat wave, there is comfort in the fact that the days are getting shorter.   The plants know that and so I look to them for the signs of things to come.
