Farm Happenings for August 8, 2023

Posted on August 6th, 2023 by Rae Strobel Barr

These happenings always seem to be about weather.   So quick weather watch...this June marked the start of an El Niño cycle, which means warm Pacific Ocean waters.   This trend along with increased overall air temps means that storms hold more rain.   The last El Niño cycle for us was 2015-17, and we had some crazy July rains (I remember 1 week we got 7 inches).    This July we saw about 14-15 inches of rain....2-3 every week for about 5 weeks!    Here we are still pretty resilient but having some challenges.   Low parts of our fields are drowned out a bit, but we are still seeing some signs in those challenged fields.  Okra, cantaloupe, peppers and eggplant are all trying to ripen up.   So if you don't see them this week then hopefully next!  Still got the Nice watermelons and some spaghetti squash to go in the shares.   If you don't love the spaghetti then try a Red Kabocha (it's a sweet deep orange squash)
