Farm Happenings for June 18, 2019

Posted on June 16th, 2019 by Rae Strobel Barr

This week marks the beginning of summer!  Peak busy season.   Just as we harvested one batch of chickens, another group got moved out of the brooder house onto pasture and yet another group arrived from the post office and into the brooder house.   So, the chickens come as day old chicks from a hatchery in Cincinnati.   The young birds must spends the first couple weeks of their lives protected from the elements. This space where they live during that time is called the brooder house.   Young birds need water, warmth and food....in that order.   Rain storms are not their friends, nor is tall grass.   So we give them some time in the brooder as a protected environment.   They go out on pasture as soon as they are big enough and then consume grass and bugs and all the things that help make these birds some of the tastiest you will ever eat!
