Farm Happenings for August 1, 2023

Posted on July 28th, 2023 by John Zilnicki

Well I guess this why the term, 'dog days of summer' came about.  The end of this week has been no joke out in them fields.  Naturally we are in the process of picking up hundreds, maybe thousands of bales of straw.  Weather has delayed the rye cutting that gets turned into straw and we pray the showers and storms hold off tomorrow until at least the afternoon.

Also this week we were ready to grade our first load of potatoes but something bad happened.  The 2 trucks we dug, melted!  Yup, they cooked up and melted.  That was from the heat, high humidity and excessive rain.  It is extremely heartbreaking but it is what it is.  Hopefully, after this weekend we will be in a better position to begin potato harvesting.

Some housekeeping business;  if your box is missing an item, (yes, we are human) please go through the Harvie missing item protocol.  It is a centralized place we can keep tract of items.  If you are deserving of a credit you will see it in your account by the end of this weekend.  Sometimes their is a field issue/ shortage at harvest time and that is why you may be missing the item.  Like a lot of lettuce and and greens have melted from this weather.  Also, thank you for your patience if you have encountered an issue with your delivery (for home delivery members), working with a 3rd party brings on its own challenges and all I can say thank you for your patience and understanding.

Lastly, keep September 20th open on your calendar.  We are in the works of planning a fun get together evening.  Stay tuned for more details!

Have a great weekend!

Your farmer,

John
