Farm Happenings for August 31, 2021

Posted on August 27th, 2021 by John Zilnicki

August is coming to an end but not without on last week of hot sweltering heat.  Our farm, and most Long Island farms faired pretty well with the glancing blow of hurricane Henri last weekend.  We were extremely fortunate and know its just a matter of time before LI is lined up with a real monster on its hands.  The vegetables they needed but the fruit trees lost a bunch of fruit as the winds were strong enough to knock off the apples, pears, peaches.

Our local fishermen faired much better then expected and they are extremely happy for that, as we are as well.  We will be resuming seafood this week.

The melon you have been seeing in your boxes(if you wanted one) is called a pixie melon.  Its called a personnel melon, as they are supposed to be 1 to 2lbs and ideal for one sitting.  They have one of the highest sugar contents of all melons and can be stored in your fridge and last for weeks.

We want to wish all families with school aged kids good luck and to have a safe and healthy school year.

Have a great weekend!

Your farmer,

John
