Farm Happenings for March 16, 2021

Posted on March 12th, 2021 by John Zilnicki

Howdy members!  I hope you got outside this week and enjoyed this gorgeous weather!  I want to thank you guys for being understanding and companionate as we work out our growing pains and find faults in our systems.  As we are building this powerful local food economy, we have come across a few temporary road blocks.  First is we are human and every once in a blue moon we goof up packing a box and miss an item.  If this happens please notify us asap.  Our biggest hurdle is working with an outside company to handle some of our home deliveries.  The demand for drivers, couriers, last mile logistics services is through the roof and Amazon keeps gobbling up most of the services.  Also, the cut off for customization is 6PM Sunday.  We are trying to give our vendors enough time to coordinate so you get the freshest product possible!  We are trying to find the right fit for our systems, so I want to thank you for your patience!!

This week we will have fresh Sea Scallops from Northfork Seafood as well as King Trumpet mushrooms from Mushrooms NYC.  If you haven't tried these mushrooms I highly recommend trying some!

As we keep expanding products from our partner farms/businesses I want to put a highlight on Acabonac Farms, where our grass fed beef comes from.  We are farily new to grass fed beef, but we are hooked!  We love the flavor, the cooking profile, and the way the animals are raised/handled, and grown on our Island.  Here is an explanation as to why Grass fed and finished beef is more expensive from Acabonac Farm, "A diet of grain per day will cost approximately $5.50 per day (per animal) and put on 4 – 5 pounds of gain per day.  You could do this in a feedlot and pump manure into a lagoon and damage the environment, and the health of the animal.  The beef will be of lesser quality and probably contain antibiotic and hormone residues.  Or you can finish the animal on its natural diet of grasses and legumes.  Acabonac does this locally of course and so if you overlay the local land, labor, insurance, etc… cost you get to a premium priced product.  We can incur all of these expenses and achieve 1.5 – 2.0 pounds of gain (on a good day).  But you will be getting an entirely different protein.  And what you will be getting is sourced from eastern Long Island.  And you will be supporting local farming on eastern Long Island and as importantly an agricultural system that is regenerative and restorative to our farmlands."

We love there philosophy and approach and are excited about the beef bundles coming up.

OK, enough about beef.. I thought we were going to have some kale and swiss chard in the menu but its 1 week out.  We will also have a small amount of micro greens in a week that we are excited about as well.  The greenhouses are filling up and we are building more greenhouses.. because I like to build them!  Enjoy the goodies and keep posting those pictures on social media!! Keep sharing the word!
