Farm Happenings for August 19, 2020

Posted on August 16th, 2020 by Shelli and Paul Meulemans

Life on the farm is a balance between the here and now, tomorrow, and the years to come. You see, as we work now, it’s easiest to use simple soil amendments which will grow the crops out for today, but would likely leave the soil depleted.  We could turn over ground and keep growing crop after crop in a small space and, yes, efficiency can be had this way, but this year we are trying more than ever before to have the long view for our farm. By giving the soil a chance to rest and grow crops that aren’t to be harvested we are increasing the well spring of nature’s abundance for next year. The last thing we want is to have to buy in tons of nutrient inputs every spring, alas that is a cycle which I fear could destroy any farm.  Things are starting to wind down and we are trying this year to have long term farm sustainability in the front of our minds more than making every dollar possible for this season.

In life, I think it’s the same way. Am I so run ragged that I need a quick pick me up just to get out and make it through another day? In July, yes. But if I can take the long view now as things begin to wind down, we can have an even stronger year next year! Now that’s a trend I can embrace. Thanks to each of you for supporting us on this journey.
