Farm Happenings for July 1, 2020

Raucous cover crops.

Yup we planted a mass of cover crops last week. Why are cover crops exciting? Really they should be referred to as carbon sequestering, nutrient absorbing, microbe feeding, tilth creating, disease suppressing, weed seed bank obliterating blessings to a farmer. Can a crop really do all that? Truly the value of nutrients grown in place is just one aspect of how these benefit a farmer.  Going in to winter and spring time, all of the nutrients these cover crops produced will be made available for next years crops by soil microbes. By relying on microbes to produce the nutrients our farm requires, I believe that we are producing nutrient dense food that tastes alright too. Enjoy!
