CSA WEEK 5

Posted on June 30th, 2020 by Lacey Arnold

The rain has arrived!

The rain has finally arrived and it's brought some awesome summer storms with it! Our first big storm of the season broke a big branch off of our tree and blew some barrels around the farm, but gosh, were just so happy for the rain, we don't even mind. It looks like our crops grew nearly a foot overnight! They are certainly overjoyed with the weather, just like us, and looking great!

This week we have just started harvesting our Green Beans. They are super crunchy and so delicious! Our Yellow Beans are just a bit behind the Green, but we are expecting to see those coming in shortly as well. With all this rain, were looking forward to big bean and pea harvests, so enjoy what may potentially be our last week of peas for the season! Serious summer favorites (like Sweet Corn!!!!) are soon to follow!

CSA UPDATES:

We are still having email complications :(
It has come to my recent attention that although we believed we had solved the TJX email complications the other week, TJX addresses were briefly unable to send emails to me! We again believe this problem has been solved, and have sent/received test emails successfully. If you have recently sent me an email from a TJX email address (or any others) but gotten no response, please try reaching out again or calling me at 413-665-8331 OR 609-273-9482. I am VERY sorry for these ongoing complications and greatly appreciate your patience and understanding.

Rescheduling Shares and Creating Holds!
All adjustments to your share delivery schedule MUST be done a week before the desired share date. All adjustments can be made right through your own Harvie account by clicking on the "deliveries" tab along the top of your screen. If you know the date you'd like to reschedule for, use "reschedule share". If you know you cannot pick up but do not yet know when you would like to receive that share, use the "hold" option. You can then reschedule that "held" share at a later date.

Customizing shares can be complicated! Here are some tips that can help:
- Use a computer NOT a phone or tablet and avoid the Internet Explorer browser. The Harvie website is a relatively new platform and still has a handful of bugs when accessed on these devices. For the smoothest experience I heavily suggest accessing your Harvie account and customizing your share through a real computer (laptop is fine) with a modern browser, like Chrome.

- There are 3 helpful icons under each produce picture on your customization screen. If you click on the "swap" button under the pictures of the produce you will ONLY get the option to bring in new items that are not already in your share. If you want to add a second of something that you already have to replace something else, you would do that by clicking the + next to what you do want and the "trashcan" next to what you don't. This is the same as "swapping".

- Your share each week is built by "value" not number of items. When you are making swaps, if your share becomes "under value" a grey box will show up on your screen underneath the pictures of the items in your share, inviting you to add more products to your share. If you do see this box, you should add more! If you don't see that box you know your share is ready to go.

- Making swaps and adding extras is essentially the same thing! Anything "under value" in your share is considered a swap. Once you go over the value of your share, it will be considered an "extra". Everything available for swapping is always also available as an extra, however there are some "extras" that are not able to be "swapped" into your share, like eggs and flower bouquets. That is the major difference between the categories of "swaps" and "extras".

- At the very bottom of your share customization screen, beneath the share contents and extra options, you can find an itemized "receipt" of the items in your share. Here you can find the price you will be charged if you are on the payment plan or if you have added/swapped in items above the value of your box.

- Do you have a question about customization that wasn't answered here? Reach out to me! New systems are always complicated, but most questions can be easily answered and can pave your way for a smoother season. I look forward to helping folks get comfortable in our new system and make the most out of their CSA experience.

Our U-Pick field in Sunderland is now closed, but we are still open in Greenfield!
Bring the whole family and pick strawberries till your hearts content! There's still plenty of beautiful, sweet smelling berries out there for the picking, but the seasons not going to last much longer! It's a great way to get outside and enjoy the sun, so stop by sometime before strawberry season says goodbye for another year! Check out our website for more information. Hope to see you there!

Recipe of the week: Green Beans with Spring Onions and Green Garlic!
Nothing says summer like fresh green beans with spring onions and green garlic! Absolutely delicious and so quick and easy, too! Use your Spring onions instead of Scallions and Green Garlic instead of traditional cured garlic, you won't regret it.
