Farm Happenings for September 21, 2022

Posted on September 17th, 2022 by Trent Loewen

Three weeks of Farm Shares left! We’ve been having beautiful weather so far in September. Friday morning had a few patches of frost on the ground, but not enough to harm anything. Lots of people assume that a frost totally finishes our garden, but that’s not the case. The corn is the first to go, along with the zucchini and cucumbers but those we can protect with row cover. The peppers are in a poly tunnel so that gives them some protection, tomatoes and cucumbers are in the greenhouse which we can heat. Then the rest like lettuce, carrots, radishes, kale, cabbage, broccoli, spinach, etc. are tolerant of several degrees of frost.

This week we have some awesome tasting baby carrots from our late carrot planting! Things finally worked out right with that last planting and there’s a beautiful crop of carrots coming. We also have a few French Breakfast radishes, with more coming next week, some more corn, really nice broccoli, and 3 kinds of potatoes. Unfortunately our pumpkin and winter squash were a crop failure so there won’t be any coming, unless we can source some from another farm. Next week we’ll have cauliflower, more radishes, and hopefully some red peppers.

Your box will be built automatically with only produce in it but everything else is available to swap in. Besides the produce, there is beef from Barnes Creek Ranch, pasture-raised eggs, fresh baking (baked by my Mom), handmade soap from The Sudsy Llama, and our homemade ranch dressing.

As always, if you have any trouble with swapping or anything else, you’re welcome to call/text or email. Trent - 306-883-8832, Lois - 306-883-9289. Also the folks at Harvie are happy to help, reach them at support@harvie.farm.

Have a great week!
