Farm Happenings for October 6, 2021

Posted on October 4th, 2021 by Trent Loewen

It’s the last week of Farm Shares! Big thanks to you for your continued support this summer! We love helping to feed you and your family with some of the finest food you could find! Although this is the last week, we will still have some produce growing yet for a few more weeks, so will be offering it through our Farm Stand. If you haven’t already, you can sign up for the Farm Stand notifications here.

It's been a beautiful fall! There's been a few light frosts, but not enough to damage the crops that are still growing. Just enough to sweeten the carrots. This week we’ll take out the tomatoes and cucumbers from the greenhouse and shut off the heat. It sounds like tomatoes have done very well for most people this summer and ours are the same. We have some larger quantities of Romas and Big Beef tomatoes listed today, if you want to get an amount for salsa or other tomato sauces. There’s also some of the heirlooms listed individually, so you can pick your favourite one.

I made a batch of salsa last week, so add some to your box if you like. We also sourced some farm eggs from a farmer down the road, so they can be swapped into your box too.

Since it’s the last week, I have some of almost everything listed, some in limited quantities though. The carrots are incredibly sweet now, especially the small ones, and the larger ones are available in 5 pound bags. They’ll keep in your fridge for a long time, if you don’t just eat them all right away! The beets are looking great, but aren’t sizing up. I do have a few ready this week though. Then there’s the last of the cucumbers, a few zucchini that survived frost, and miscellaneous squash.

Thanks again for joining us this summer, and have a blessed Thanksgiving!
