Farm Happenings for January 2, 2021

Posted on December 27th, 2020 by Jack Manix

Hi Folks, Looks like we'll have enough crop inventory for a limited Deep Winter CSA. The Deep Winter is not run through the Harvie system. It's a prepacked box with no option for swapping this year. We will still have plenty of greens, potatoes, onions, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, carrots, cabbage and odds and ends. The cost is $100 (4 Saturday pickups 11 am to 1 pm @ $25 per week). Shares are limited to 65 so if you are interested please shoot us an email at walkerfarmvt@gmail.com soon. The pickup Saturdays will be 1/16, 1/23, 1/30 and 2/6.

Did we just have 2' of snow or did I dream it? We spent 2 days clearing pathways and Mother Nature wiped out most of it in a day. The snow is nice to have to pack around the greenhouses and prevent drafts and to provide a nice winter blanket for our strawberries on top of their straw mulch. Bare ground does make it a lot easier to get around to all the greenhouses for picking, especially the five we have out back that aren't heated. We try to plant the hardier greens out there like kale and spinach. Now that the sun is starting to hang around longer each day we start to see regrowth on spinach and arugula if it doesn't get too cold at night. Still 2 more weeks of the regular winter CSA and we know anything can happen!
